Here are a few handy tips on how to prepare railings and then apply Gold Leaf Paints from Goldfarben:
- First, with sandpaper smooth out any pitted areas or rust spots, and roughen the surface of any residual paint.
- Then make sure the surface is clean, free from any grease and dry.
- You are now ready to paint!
- Decide which Goldfarben paint you wish to use:
- Craig’s Gold Leaf is a solvent based, highly brilliant, iridescent gold paint, that looks very similar to gold leaf.
- Liquid Gold Leaf, is a water based high lustre gold paint, with a rich smooth sheen.
Either paint will go on easily and last for years, and they won’t tarnish or fade.
- Starting from the tip of the railing work your way down. Do not overload the brush! Goldfarben Gold Leaf Paints are highly pigmented, so a little goes a long way. They flow really well and dry fast, therefore it is far better to apply two thin coats, with a 30-minute wait between coats, than to apply a thick coat that looks drippy and dries unevenly.
After applying the second coat, clean your brush in white spirit (Craig’s Gold Leaf) or water (Liquid Gold Leaf). No need to apply any sealant.
At this stage, best practice is to attach a “wet gold paint” sign on the railings, for at least an hour until the paint is completely dry. Better still, write “Wet Gold Leaf Paint from Goldfarben. www.goldfarben.co.uk”!
